Costume Ball
The evening dawns, the sky goes grey,
Everyone come out! It's time to play!
Put on your cloaks, gloves, and masks,
Drink from your red plastic cups and flasks!
Powder your nose, place eyeliner there,
Frazzle and razzle and dazzle your hair!
The costume ball is here! Let us go!
And everyone there you'll already know!
The frat boy with his shiny blond hair,
The ugly and hot girl combo pair,
The activist, and conservative too,
The co-op chef who can only make stew.
The nerdy kid who studies all the time,
The slam poet that makes interesting rhymes,
The religious kids and the girls with short skirts,
The friendly players who go around and start to flirt.
The shy kid in the corner next to the pimply loser,
The classic wanna be with his pimped out PT Cruiser.
The muscle-head, with his stupidity and bulk,
The pimply-faced loser who stands in the corner and sulks.
The rich kids with their trust fund bank rolls,
The beautiful people with their drawn-on moles.
The goths dressed in black and the metal heads,
The hippies and ninteen-year old newlyweds.
Every stereotype is here; come join the fun!
The costume ball lasts all night until the day is done!
We all have our masks on to protect what's dear,
Because if we reveal who we are, we have so much to fear.
If we never show our identities, and people bring us down,
At least they can never cut us deep enough so that our hearts do frown.
If we keep our defenses up, we can guarantee no pain,
But then we can't let anyone in and then we'll go insane.
But what's so wrong with insanity? Going mad is grand!
We get to wear whatever we want and make dreamscapes in the sand.
So let us all alienate and head out to the ball,
I'll put up all my safety nets so to cushion the fall.
You may think me cynical, sad, even mean.
But am I showing you myself or do I really want to be seen?
Which mask am I wearing today? Or perhaps I'm showing you the real me.
Perhaps you'll never know, as I change back and forth so frequently.
So let's all go to the costume ball! Let's step out into our daily lives!
Masked murderers with their smiley faces and the pacifists with knives!
Let us celebrate anonymity and raise our glasses high!
Although we may never find ourselves at least we'll get by!
So come one come all, let us depart, but don't forget who you are.
For if you lose yourself for a bit too long, you'll fade out like a dying star.
